Recently, I’ve been struggling with my fitness program. It’s a great one that enhances mobility and flexibility with fantastic benefits, but I found myself waking up many mornings dreading my workouts. That’s not like me. Of course, I have days when I don’t feel like working out, but this was different. With this particular program, I dreaded it daily. I left my workouts feeling frustrated and wishing I had moved my body another way.
I kept telling myself, "You are not a quitter. You start something and finish it." But I also noticed I was slacking in my nutrition, making too many trips to the pizza and chocolate aisle. For me, when my workouts and nutrition are off, it’s a sign that something’s wrong.
The first day of the program, I remember holding my pre-workout drink, inviting God into my workout, and feeling ready to go. I invited Him in but didn’t really seek His guidance on whether this was the right program for me. Maybe I was still riding the high from completing a gut health program where I felt great.
It’s so important to seek God in every aspect of your life, including your health and fitness. Ask Him which program and nutrition plan to follow. After all, He knows our bodies better than we do. I remember last year, He led me to do Barre. At first, I resisted because I loved my weights, but I followed His leading. For eight weeks, I woke up excited for Barre. I discovered that even 2lb weights can be heavy! My chiropractor barely had to adjust me, and I received compliments on how my body was toning. Most importantly, God knew I was entering a stressful time, and that workout and nutrition plan helped me balance the craziness.
God gives us tools and resources for a reason. You can pray to lose weight or eat healthy, but you also have to take action. Do your part, and watch God do His. He will show up and show off. Seek God, let Him lead you on your fitness journey, and take that action.
But remember, don’t use seeking God as an excuse to not get started. Don’t rely on your emotions—set those aside. Sometimes the workout will be challenging, and you will have to go through the hard parts. But God will get you through it. He will sustain you and give you peace. Your health and fitness journey won’t be perfect, but you have a perfect God to rely on. Do your part, and He will do His.
I have a hard time asking for help from people and from God. I often feel like I don’t deserve it or that I have to take care of myself. One particular morning, I had enough. I made my pre-workout drink, had my Jesus time, and told God I was frustrated with the workout program and how my body was feeling. Through this program, I had some old flare-ups, which I believe were due to stress. God was so kind and gentle; He came into my room, gave me a new workout plan, and told me what nutrition path to follow. I’m going to take it and run with it. He’s never led me wrong, even if it’s not what I initially want to do.
I need to stay in my lane and not compare myself to others. If I look at someone doing CrossFit and think I need to do that, I might miss what God has for me. We all have a Kingdom purpose, and God knows which fitness and nutrition plan will help us get there.
If you have a relationship with Jesus, you know His voice:
“My sheep listen to my voice; I know them, and they follow me.” (John 10:27)
Seek Him and follow Him in all you do.
